Artificially manufactured grass products are now more popular than ever. With both natural and synthetic options, many people wonder how these two types of products differ from one another.

First of all, it’s important to understand that neither artificial turf nor artificial grass is 100% real or identical to the product you might see on your local golf course or in your neighbor’s yard. Some products are closer to the real thing than others, but none of them are exactly like the grass you grew up with.

Turf is used to describe sports grass, which is longer. Artificial grass is the officially correct term for landscape grass, which is shorter and fluffier.

Artificial turf

So let’s start with turf. Artificial turf is crafted from mostly manmade materials, which might include polyethylene or polypropylene fibers that look and feel like natural grass. However, artificial turf doesn’t actually come from seeds and it’s not grown in the ground. It’s manufactured by weaving these synthetic fibers together and then tufting them with a thick layer of backing cloth, meanwhile, coating with glue. It is usually longer pile height, made of monofilament or fibrillated yarn (the straight yarn) and for sports field application.

On the other hand, artificial grass is still made of those manmade PP ,PE or nylon material and the producing craft are almost the same as turf. The differences are artificial grass is usually thatched with curly yarn , shorter ,more filaments of fibers ,more color options and mostly for landscaping purpose. Which means it is more close to natural grass appearance.

Artificial turf vs Artificial grass

Both types of artificial grass products require infrequent watering and minimal maintenance compared to natural grass, but they also have their own benefits and drawbacks. Artificial turf might be better at resisting disease and end up saving you money if you live in an area that requires regular mowing. It’s also more durable, requiring less maintenance and it won’t wilt in the summer heat or turn brown when a cold snap hits your area.

Artificial grass is also durable, but it can be damaged by heavy play and foot traffic. It also needs to be watered on a regular basis and it’s not ideal for areas that receive heavy rainfall since the water could pool on top of the grass, which isn’t good for its longevity.

With the upgrading of the artificial turf process, this product has become more and more environmentally friendly. They are mostly made of recyclable materials. So when you want to replace the lawn after five to ten years, it will be recycled again, without any pollution to the environment.

Whether you decide on artificial grass or you go with artificial turf, the important thing is that you choose a product that’s right for your home’s unique needs and budget. After all, you don’t want to spend money on one type of product when another would better suit your tastes or lifestyle.
